The outbreak of cholera in the late 1800s increased the urgency for water services. To address these concerns, Kubota began developing cast iron pipes for waterworks, and succeeded in mass production, which was considered difficult in Japan at that time. This greatly contributed to the development of Japan’s modern water supply. We have also commercialized technologies and products related to water circulation in areas such as water supply, sewage, water treatment, and plant management, and helped to reduce water pollution generated in the process of economic development. In recent years, we have been providing total solutions that address social issues and needs around the world, such as earthquake-resistant ductile iron pipes and water resource recycling technologies to resolve global water shortages.

Kubota technologies have been cultivated through constant research and trial-and-error and handed down by engineers since the water pipes developed at its founding. To this day, we have succeeded in producing ductile iron pipes with a diameter of 2.6 meters, the world's largest, and in developing the world's first earthquake-resistant ductile iron pipes. Kubota’s ductile iron pipes support water infrastructure not only Japan but also overseas as world-class water pipes.

Kubota has been researching and developing water treatment technologies since the 1950s and has contributed to the treatment of public sewage and wastewater from businesses for many years. We also provide a wide range of water treatment solutions tailored to a diverse array of needs, including septic tanks (Joukasou) developed in Japan that serve areas not covered by public sewage, and systems using our exclusive Submerged Membrane technology, which offers advanced and stable treatment of sewage so that it can be reused. We contribute to improvements in sanitary living conditions, public health, and water environments.

with Kubota’s Original KSIS IoT System
The Kubota Smart Infrastructure System (KSIS) is our unique IoT-based system that provides remote monitoring, diagnosis, and control services for water and environmental equipment. Using IoT, various water plants and equipment can be monitored remotely, operational status can be visualized in real time, accumulated monitoring data can be analyzed to predict irregularities in advance, and equipment repairs and upgrades can be planned quickly and efficiently. We will further reduce labor and improve efficiency through management systems that utilize the know-how and state-of-the-art technologies we have cultivated as a water and environmental equipment manufacturer.
KSIS improves operational efficiency and life cycle cost issues at water treatment facilities
Water treatment facilities face challenges including reduced local budgets and personnel shortages. Workers face heavy burdens when responding to issues at large-scale facilities, and therefore improving work efficiency and life-cycle cost at such sites have become significant matters to address. KSIS can utilize the various types of monitoring data gathered by IoT, and using this service enables monitoring of equipment, plant status, and waterway work via the Internet and collection of data, along with analysis of water quality and vibration data by AI to detect changes and plan appropriate repairs and upgrades. We will continue to promote labor-saving and efficient water supply maintenance using the latest technologies and the power of IoT.

Respond to Global Water Environmental Needs
Japan is among the world leaders in water environment infrastructure and technologies, and puts these technologies and products to use in taking on global water environmental issues. One particularly serious issue is water shortages. It is said that 700 million people around the world do not have access to safe water, heightening the need for water infrastructure development throughout the world. Kubota provides technologies and products from Japan, a country with abundant water, in ways that are tailored to the circumstances of each country. Kubota’s focus on local needs and dependable technologies to meet them
Kubota has installed its submerged membrane at North America’s largest water reclamation facility located in Canton, Ohio (US). This is a membrane filtration device that produces treated water safer than conventional methods. Its main advantage was its applicability for small- and medium-sized facilities, but in this instance, the request was for equipment over a large installation area and with high energy efficiency in keeping with the demands of large-scale facility modifications. Kubota answered these requests by developing a system for large-scale treatment facilities, and its implementation was decided. Kubota’s focus on meeting local needs and the technologies it has made possible support water environment worldwide.
Providing safe water to Bangladesh
Chittagong is Bangladesh's second largest city. The Karnaphuli Water Supply Project is being implemented to raise the water penetration rate in this city, where reliable water supply has been difficult due to leakage and pollution caused by aging. Ductile iron pipes manufactured and supplied by Kubota are being used in both the first and second stages. As a result of this project, the city's water supply coverage has increased from 47% of the population to 85%. This has greatly contributed to healthier lives for the local citizens.
Bringing earthquake-resistant ductile iron pipes with Japanese technologies to Los Angeles
Los Angeles is located on America’s earthquake-prone West Coast. In 2012, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power tested Kubota’s earthquake-resistant ductile iron pipes to protect its lifelines from major earthquakes. These pipes, which have a unique structure that absorbs shock by flexing and contracting, suffered little damage in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake. By bringing Japan’s technological achievements to the world, Kubota technologies protect local lifelines and support environments where people can live with peace of mind.
