Proposing New Values to Enrich People’s Lives in the USA and Solve the World’s Food Problems

The population of the USA, a country which boasts a vast land mass, is still growing and is filled with an energy that drives the world economy. At the root of this country is an affluent culture in which people work at the office during the week, and on weekends grow vegetables at home in their large gardens in the leafy suburbs, or enjoy life in the country after retirement. In the USA, there was a latent need for people to enjoy a richer life in their own way or with their families. As one way to fulfill this need, expectations were high for the introduction of convenient and easy-to-use compact tractors and mowers of an ideal size.

In addition, small-scale farmers who produce the agricultural products and processed goods that add color to the American diet, such as orchard and wine vineyard owners, were also in need of machinery of an ideal size for their farms to lighten their workload and improve efficiency and productivity.

Kubota started exporting tractors to the USA in 1969. However, we struggled at first because the scale of farms there is of an order of magnitude larger than in Japan, and Kubota did not produce large farm machinery for dry-field farming. We found a way out of this situation through reverse thinking, by taking advantage of our machinery’s compact size. This was a shift in direction in the sense of supporting the affluent lives of individuals and the small-scale farmers who add color to their diets. The USA is the world’s largest exporter of agricultural products, supporting the world’s food supply by producing large quantities of crops suited to its climate on large-scale farms that make the most of its vast land. Kubota aims to help solve future global food issues, and full-scale entry into this huge dry-field farming agriculture market would be vital if it were to achieve this goal.
